Week 10 Story Lab: TED Language Videos

This response is from this playlist of TED-ED video

These are about languages!

  • How languages evolve
    • What a crazy concept! Language is wild man
    • All of humanity spoke the same?
      • That's wild
    • Why so many
    • Not as populated
    • The groups moved and became isolated
    • They changed the vocab/accents
      • Language families
      • How do they know?
      • Grammar- boy that sound complex
      • Patterns, and syntax, not so much how things sound
      • Wow, large variations in how many languages we might have
        • 3,000-8,000
      • Native languages should be included
      • It's migration and isolation basically
      • I wish we could learn how it all started!
  • How did English Evolve?
    • A thought exercise--interesting!
    • Oh a story
    • Romans--duh they're everywhere
    • Anglo-Saxon. It's very close to modern English
      • Old English
      • Old Norse
      • Norman conquest (war)
      • French speaking v. old norse/old english
      • So many words flowing in
    • Man this is so wild. So many things have to happen for language to flow
    • Connotations of words/how they change our perception
  • How many verb tenses are there in English?
    • I hate verb tenses
    • How we talk about time
    • There seems to be 3
      • Past
      • Present
      • Future
    • Guess there are more than that--I won't list them
    • It sounds confusing
    • I don't like this
    • Too many words at once and definitions
    • They all happen at a different moment
    • So there are 12! So many
    • Translation is difficult lol
    • Ew this hurts my brain
    • What's crazy is that our brains/us know these things without really trying/knowing them
    • Like, we just subconsciously pick these rules up!
  • Are....Real Languages?
    • I think these are GOT things
    • So, these are entire languages
    • It's not all about the words!
    • It's probably about grammar and rules
    • If have to know how to put the words together-of course!
    • It makes them wild, and hard to learn---they evolve and change
  • Where do new words come from?
    • They evolve from old ones
    • They just happen maybe lol
    • 1,000 new words every year--that's more than I thought
    • The world and science changes, so the language must do that also
    • Tic Tocs and Vines lol
    • Borrowed words from other countries
    • Multiple words that are combined into 1 new word
    • Wow this is a cool video--words and people are wild! The brain is amazing
    • Language academy
    • Useful and Catchy-Meme! lol It's an old word. I didn't know that!!
    • Words that describe themselves!
  • How to use a semicolon!
    • No one knows
    • I saw that in informal writing, no one should use a semicolon lol
    • They are silly to me.
    • Oh it clarifies a sentence by grouping
    • Links independent clauses that are similar
    • Aw, boring writing. Too bad lol
    • I try to use them; they can't make me.
  • When to use apostrophes
    • I mostly know the rules on these, but I love refreshers
    • even grammar fans argue about these things--it can vary!
    • Just pick the one you like and use it constantly-that's the key (in my opinion)
  • Does grammar matter?
    • I think it matters, but not as much as some people like to think
    • The patterns change and evolve naturally.
    • It's okay to mess it up or say things differently
    • So this says no? lol
    • Descriptivism--that's me! It happens! Nothing you can do about it, people should just speak the way they want!
    • People of power!
    • Written grammar v. spoken
    • So many things are harder in writing than in speaking
  • I like learning about language, but sometimes it goes over my head lol. It's such so interesting. Humans are so smart. So many language complexities that we just naturally pick up on
